How to Connect the Razer Thresher 7.1 Ultimate PS4 to the PS4 Slim

Here’s how you successfully connect the Razer Thresher 7.1 Ultimate PS4 to your PS4 Slim console.

As we wrote in our best headsets of 2019 article last month, the Razer Thresher 7.1 Ultimate PS4 is an amazing headset for Sony’s console, but due to it relying on an optical output on the PS4, the headsets isn't officially supported on the Slim.

While the original PS4 and the PS4 Pro feature an optical out port, Sony removed it altogether for the PS4 Slim. As such, several higher-end headsets can’t officially be used on the Slim. Luckily, we’ve found a way how PS4 Slim users can still use one of the best wireless PS4 headsets available.

The Thresher Ultimate comes with a wireless receiver that needs to be connected to the PS4 through an optical cable. Instead of connecting the transmitter directly to the PS4, the supplied optical cable can also be connected to the optical sound output of your TV. Please note that this method of connecting hasn’t been mentioned by Razer, but we can confirm that it works.

Please note that a TV featuring an (digital) optical out port is required to be able to connect the wireless transmitter. We’ve included setup instructions for the Razer Thresher 7.1 Ultimate on the PS4 Slim below.

Razer Thresher 7.1 Ultimate PS4/ PS4 Slim hardware installation

  • Connect the optical cable from the Thresher 7.1 wireless transmitter to the optical output of the TV.
  • Connect the USB-audio cable from the Thresher 7.1 wireless transmitter to one of the USB ports on the front of the PS4 Slim

We’ve already seen reports of people using an HDMI audio extractor to connect the headset with a PS4 Slim, but we haven’t tested this method ourselves. Through this method, the     PS4 Slim will be connected to the audio extractor through HDMI and the TV will be connected for video to the extractor. An optional cable is then required from the extractor to the wireless transmitter.
