Skate 4 is real and it’s a proper console game, not a mobile title

After years of nothing but hopes and rumours, EA has finally announced that a new Skate game is in development and it’s not a mobile title or a remaster.

Unfortunately, they didn’t say much more than that though, as work on the game has only just started – which implies it will be next gen only.

The last Skate game was released in 2010 and while the series has always been acclaimed as the most realistic skateboarding series it’s never been as financially successful las the Tony Hawk’s franchise.

According to pro skater Jason Dill, EA had plans to remaster Skate 3 as a mobile game, but he refused to be involved and insisted that they make a proper console title instead.

Whether Skate 4 is a result of his comments is impossible to say right now, but we might find out if he ends up being in the new game.

In the brief announcement video though, franchise director Deran Chung and creative director Chris Parry credit fans for helping to ensure the game got made.

After years without any serious skateboarding sims, there’s suddenly an influx of new titles, with remake Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 & 2 due out this September and new title SkaterXL out next month.

But while those two may be in danger of cannibalising each other’s sales Skate 4’s release date, like all of EA’s next gen titles, seems to be at least a year away at the moment.
