Zion Williamson is NBA 2K21's next gen console cover athlete

Superstar Zion Williamson has been chosen as the 2K21 next-gen release cover star (2K Sports)

The New Orleans Pelican star and number one overall pick in the NBA follows on from Damian Lillard as the second cover athlete for NBA 2K21.

Following on from the unveiling of Damian Lillard on Wednesday, as 2K Sports’ cover star for the current generation console release of 2K21, the New Orleans Pelican forward is being added to the long list of basketball superstars to grace 2K’s covers.

Zion Williamson, the NBA’s 2019 number one overall pick has been chosen to be 2K21’s cover athlete for the next gen console versions of the game in October.

2K Sports has chosen to reveal its three cover stars on three consecutive days this week, starting with Damian Lillard’s on Tuesday.

But it is superstar in the making, Zion Williamson, who gets the honour of featuring as the cover star for the 2K21 release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, both due out later this year.

In his short time in the league Zion has been propelled to superstar status, with comparisons to LeBron James not unheard of.

The Pelicans guard took a while to get going thanks to a knee injury but quickly replicated his trademark explosive slams in college on the courts of the NBA.

‘Being on the cover of NBA 2K has been a dream since I was a kid and to be the first NBA 2K21 cover athlete for the next generation of gaming is really special,’ Zion said of the accolade.

‘Since the day I joined Team 2K, I’ve wanted to make an impact on basketball culture both on and off the court, and being the cover athlete for NBA 2K21 on next-gen consoles lets me do that. I can’t wait to be part of this global phenomenon and hoop with all the ballers out there on NBA 2K21.’

2K will reveal their final cover star on Thursday but have kept their cards close to their chest. In previous years a Legend Edition of the game has paid tribute to an outgoing or retiring superstar and fans will be expecting something similar this year.

2K21 is set for release sometime in October, although no official release date has been announced yet. It will be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, and Stadia, as well as next-gen consoles.
