Music-Streaming Services Remove Racist Content

Top music-streaming services have removed racist, anti-Semitic, and homophobic material following an investigation by the BBC.

The BBC found an excerpt of a Hitler speech, calls to white power, and songs celebrating the Holocaust, among other things on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, and Deezer. The services have since removed or hidden the tracks.

“It’s difficult to quantify the scale of the problem,” the BBC says. Some groups change song or album titles to go undetected, while lyrics remain the same. A bulk of the 20 examples it discovered promoted white supremacy and were located on Spotify.

The BBC opted not to name or link to the offending content.

Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, and Deezer did not immediately respond to PCMag’s request for comment.
