PS5 Expansion SSD Price Appears at Walmart

The price of Xbox Series X and Series S Expansion Storage Cards has already been revealed, but the first price for a PlayStation 5 expansion SSD has now appeared online.

As GameRant reports, a tweet by the Marlon Gaming Nation account includes a photo taken at Walmart showing the price tag for a “PS5 500GB SSD Drive.” It’s listed as costing $115, which seems in line with Xbox expansion card pricing when you consider a 1TB card costs $220.

For now, there’s no way to confirm this is real or indeed accurate. If it is real, then it seems likely 1TB versions will end up matching the Xbox expansion cards on price and being $220. Even if they are double the 500GB and priced at $230, retailers will likely knock them down by $10. This also reinforces the fact the most expensive upgrade for this generation of games consoles is going to be storage.

The last time the high cost of storage was talked about with regards to gaming hardware was back when the PS Vita launched and required proprietary Vita memory cards. They were very expensive and could cost as much as the handheld for the larger cards. If you want one today, expect to pay upwards of $170 for a 64GB card. Before that we has the PSOne and PS2 memory cards, which at the time were seen as expensive, costing nearly as much as a new game.
