Xbox Series X UK launch – everything you need to know

Wow, it’s actually almost here (pic: Microsoft)

The Xbox Series X is less than 12 hours away, so here’s what you can expect from the console and its launch.

The beginning of the next generation of gaming is finally upon us, with the first of the new consoles, the Xbox Series X and S, launching tomorrow.

Microsoft has spent the year so far explaining why you should invest in the new Xbox but transitioning to a new generation of consoles can be a tad confusing for anyone.

So, let’s run through all the important details that you need to know in preperation, in case you’re still on the fence about buying one for yourself or a family member this Christmas.

What’s the difference between Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S?

The two consoles are fundamentally exactly the same, capable of playing the exact same games and having many of the same features.

The key differences are that the Xbox Series S is less powerful and smaller, both in terms of size and storage space (512GB of internal storage compared to one terabyte), than the Xbox Series X.

As such, the Xbox Series S has some restrictions, like not being able to offer native 4K resolution, and lacking a disc drive, so it can’t be used to play physical copies of games.

How much do the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S cost?

The Xbox Series X costs £449, while the Xbox Series S is cheaper at £249.

Are they the same as the Xbox One X and Xbox One S?

No, the Xbox One X and Xbox One S are completely different consoles.

As you can see, the Xbox Series S is much smaller compared to its big brother (pic: Microsoft)

What games can be played on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S?

Aside from games made for the Xbox Series X, both consoles will have backwards compatibility.

This allows them to play virtually every game available on the Xbox One and many on the earlier Xbox 360 and original Xbox.

What benefits are there to playing Xbox One games on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S via backwards compatibility?

The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S will actually improve old games, such as increasing the frame rate and/or reducing load times.

What exclusives are there for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S?

Unfortunately, the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S will not have any exclusives at launch.

Microsoft does have exclusives planned for next year and beyond, including Halo Infinite, The Medium, and Avowed.

Some of these Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S games I already own on Xbox One. Do I have to buy them again?

No, the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S have something called Smart Delivery, which entitles you to a free Xbox Series X/S copy of the game if you own it on Xbox One.

It also works in reverse. If you buy an Xbox Series X/S game, you can get it for free on Xbox One.

There will be plenty of third-party games to enjoy, such as the new Assassin’s Creed (Pic: Ubisoft)

Can I expand the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S’ storage space so I can have more room for games?

Yes, you can use an external hard drive to store your games. Microsoft is even selling 1TB expansion cards.

Can I transfer digital games and save data from the Xbox One to the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S?

Yes, you can transfer them back and forth between the Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S using a USB drive. Additional details can be found on Microsoft’s website.

How can I pre-order an Xbox Series X and/or Xbox Series S?

At the time of writing, the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S are unavailable to pre-order.

Hopefully, additional stock will be made available on launch day tomorrow.

I pre-ordered an Xbox Series X and/or Xbox Series S but I need to collect it from the store. Am I still able to do that during lockdown?

The second UK lockdown has undeniably hampered the consoles’ launch, as the rules state that non-essential shops must remain closed.

However, retailers are still able to fulfil pre-orders. For example, GAME is allowing customers who have pre-ordered to visit their local store to pre-purchase it and then come in between 8am and 2pm on launch day to pick it up.

Is Microsoft doing anything to celebrate the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S’ launch, like a launch party?

Since it can’t hold a public party, Microsoft is instead hosting a six-hour livestream, which will feature exclusive gameplay and opportunities for viewers to win prizes.

The Xbox Series X/S releases on Tuesday, November 10.
