Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is UK Xmas no. 1 – Games charts 12 December

Cyberpunk 2077 has flubbed its chance to be the UK Christmas number one, as Call Of Duty: Black Ops also misses out for the first time.

The accolade of Christmas number one has lost a lot of its importance in recent years, as physical sales make up a smaller and smaller percentage of a game’s overall business. Although what’s cheapened it even more is that the last number one before Christmas often earns its place thanks to retailer discounts not overall popularity.

That’s exactly what’s happened to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which saw sales jump by 66% last week, pushing it just ahead of Call Of Duty and leaving the disgraced Cyberpunk 2077 in third place. Although there were only 9,000 sales difference between Animal Crossing at number five and Assassin’s Creed at number one – so it was all very close.

It’s the first time any Ubisoft game has claimed the Christmas number one and only the third time it hasn’t been FIFA or Call Of Duty in the last 15 years, as well being the first time a Black Ops title hasn’t made it to the top slot.
