Perfect Dark reboot coming to Xbox Series X reveals first trailer

Confirmed: Joanna Dark still has pink hair (pic: Microsoft)

Microsoft has officially announced a new entry in the Perfect Dark franchise, with what seems to be an Xbox Series X/S exclusive.

It’s been rumoured for years now, but Microsoft has finally revealed what their new studio The Initiative is working on and it is indeed a new Perfect Dark.

Unlike the various pre-existing developers they’ve been buying up recently, The Initiative was created from scratch and populated with veterans from a number of top studios, including Crystal Dynamics and Naughty Dog.

There was no actual gameplay footage shown of the new Perfect Dark, just a cinematic trailer, and in fact it was impossible to guess that’s what the game was until the reveal of Joanna Dark right at the end.

The game is called simply Perfect Dark, but it doesn’t seem to be a remake so we assume it’s going to be classified as a reboot, soft or otherwise.

The story already seems more interesting than the ones in the original games and is described as ‘eco sci-fi’ by The Initiative.

It almost seems like a sort of reverse cyberpunk, where evil corporations have saved the world from ecological disaster but, because they’re evil, there’s a sting in the tale that secret agent Joanna Dark has to discover.

The original game on the N64 was a spiritual successor to GoldenEye 007 and while the considerably less popular prequel, Perfect Dark Zero, had some limited third person elements they were both primarily first person shooters.

It’s not clear what the new game is, although the implication was that it’ll be an Xbox Series X/S exclusive and won’t be appearing on Xbox One, which also implies it won’t be out until at least 2022.

There’s not enough information to speculate further but hopefully we’ll get some more information next year.

Rare, creators of the original two games, have already given it their seal of approval, although given Microsoft owns them they could hardly say otherwise.
