Seven-time Tetris world champion Jonas Neubauer has passed away due to a “sudden medical emergency.” He was 39.

As NME reports, Neubauer’s death was confirmed on his official Twitter account. “We are devastated, overwhelmed with grief, and we already miss him dearly. Information to follow when it becomes available,” the message reads.

Neubauer was instrumental in further legitimizing Tetris in the esports arena. He claimed supremacy in the Classic Tetris World Championship seven times over, including the first tournament in 2010. When he didn’t emerge victorious in first place, he also claimed second several times in the past decade.

“This is a tremendous loss in so many ways. Jonas Neubauer was one of the greatest classic Tetris players of all time in skill, spirit, and kindness,” the official Tetris account tweeted.

In addition to testing his skills out in Tetris tournaments, Neubauer spent time on Twitch streaming under the moniker NubbinsGoody, where he also explored titles like The Last of Us Part 2.

A memorial fund for Neubauer on GoFundMe has raised over $40,000 in the late Tetris great’s name. Neubauer is survived by his wife Heather Ito, mother Sharry Neubauer, brothers Jason and Justin, and six nephews.
