Resident Evil Village vampire Lady Dimitrescu is 9’ 6” tall say Capcom

Capcom has acknowledged the unexpected popularity of Lady Dimitrescu, as the game’s art director thanks fans for their support.

Following a year that has seen such unexpected hits as Fall Guys and Among Us it’s clear that you can never predict exactly what is going to take the internet’s fancy. Resident Evil is always popular but who would’ve expected the most popular aspect of the new game would be an almost 10-foot-tall vampire lady?

Although the character in Resident Evil Village is called Countess Alcina Dimitrescu many fans still just call her ‘Vampire Lady’, although until now it’s not been entirely clear if she is a vampire or exactly how tall she is.

Responding to fan excitement around the character though art director Tomonori Takano has revealed that she is 9’ 6” (2.9m) tall, including her heels and hat.

Who and what is Lady Dimitrescu?

Exactly why she’s that tall is not clear, since she clearly has trouble fitting through door frames in her own house, but then it’s not clear what exactly she is and if she was ever human.

The ending of the PlayStation 5 exclusive Maiden demo seems to imply she’s a B.O.W. (bio-organic weapon, the general term used for most Resident Evil monsters) but ever since her first appearance she’s been referred to by fans as a vampire, even though she doesn’t have the teeth for it or any obvious aversion to daylight.

The Maiden demo does confirm that she drinks human blood, with background lore that’s highly reminiscent of the legends of Countess Elizabeth Báthory, but whether that counts as being a vampire is open to debate.

Takano refers to her and her ‘daughters’ as vampiric but that’s not quite the same as saying they’re actually vampires, just that they’re vampire-esque. Vampire adjacent, you might say.

Whether Lady Dimitrescu is actually the mother of the three daughters is also a mystery, especially as they don’t seem to be unusually tall and have powers that are more similar to Marguerite from Resident Evil 7 than Lady Dimitrescu.

All will no doubt be explained in the final game but one side benefit of Lady Dimitrescu’s unexpected popularity is that it reinforces how important the cheesy atmosphere of older Resident Evil games is to the appeal of the series.

The two remakes, especially Resident Evil 3, took themselves unusually seriously but, especially after playing the Maiden demo, it seems as if Resident Evil Village has just the right mix of shlock silliness and genuine scares.
