Activision Is Reducing Warzone and Modern Warfare File Sizes By Up to 33GB

The storage requirements for the latest Call of Duty games typically require hundreds of gigabytes, with Black Ops Cold War demanding up to 250GB alone. However, with the launch of the Season Two Reloaded update on March 30, both Modern Warfare and Warzone are receiving a major reduction in file size.

Activision announced the storage reduction on the Call of Duty blog, and the amount of space saved depends on the platform and whether you own the full version of Modern Warfare/Warzone, or the free-to-play Warzone game. At a minimum, you’ll get 10GB back, but the saving could be as high as 33GB. As to how Activision achieved the savings, the blog explains, “Enhancements to the overall content management system has been made possible through data optimization and streamlining content packs needed for individual game modes.”

The file size reductions break down as follows:

  • PC – 11.8 GB (Warzone Only) / 30.6 GB (Warzone and Modern Warfare)
  • PS5 – 10.9 GB (Warzone Only) / 30.6 GB (Warzone and Modern Warfare)
  • PS4 – 10.9 GB (Warzone Only) / 30.6 GB (Warzone and Modern Warfare)
  • Xbox Series X|S – 14.2 GB (Warzone Only) / 33.6 GB (Warzone and Modern Warfare)
  • Xbox One – 14.2 GB (Warzone Only) / 33.6 GB (Warzone and Modern Warfare)

The Warzone update varies in size between 52GB and 57.8GB depending on the platform. On PC, it’s 52.4GB for Warzone, or 133.6GB for Warzone and Modern Warfare, but keep in mind the savings above occur once this update is installed.

In terms of new content, the Season Two Reloaded update “includes several new maps, modes, and features for Black Ops Cold War, in addition to two new Operators, the new ZRG 20mm sniper rifle, and new bundles that will also be available within Warzone.” You’ll be able to grab the Black Ops Cold War content on March 29 at 6pm ET/9pm PT, and for Warzone on March 30 at 8pm ET/11pm PT.
