Avengers game thinks adding more grind will attract new players

To coincide with the release of the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions, Avengers will be slowing down XP gains.

Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics’ Avengers game has undoubtedly struggled since its launch. It’s first batch of post-launch DLC failed to leave much of an impact (some of it even had to be cut), so there’s arguably a lot riding on this month’s DLC and the release of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions.

Releasing the game on current hardware could potentially attract new players, as well as win back those who dropped the game, but a recent update from the official website, covering upcoming changes has got more than a few heads tilting.

It’s been decided that players have been levelling up their characters too quickly, so the game will be slowing down how much experience a character earns, starting from level 25. Basically, each subsequent level will require more and more experience to reach.

‘In most RPGs, the amount of XP you need to level up increases as you gain levels in a curve, but our system is a straight line,’ reads the blog post, ‘This has led to pacing issues, such as skill points currently being rewarded too fast, which may be confusing and overwhelming to newer players. We want each decision to invest in a skill or Heroic to be more meaningful.’

While this kind of levelling up system is standard in role-playing games, the decision has been met with mostly befuddlement. Avengers’ combat is already quite mindless, but character abilities make it slightly more interesting and like you’re really playing as Iron Man or the Hulk. But soon those abilities, the things that help define these characters, are going to be harder to unlock, risking making the game feel even more like a button-masher.

The blog post even recommends players grind their characters up to the maximum level before the new update rolls in on March 18, the same day that the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions release – portraying the update as something to be avoided rather than welcomed.

The update will also change how certain cosmetics are earned. Random cosmetic drops have already been temporarily disabled, with the plan being to add them to the in-game store. The goal is to make obtaining certain cosmetics less random and provide more player agency. You can read about it in more depth on the official blog post.

The update and new versions will also release alongside the second major character DLC, the Clint Barton Hawkeye. His new story missions will involve time travel shenanigans and seem to be setting up a potential Kree invasion, although it’s odd that the game’s first two character additions are different versions of Hawkeye.

Marvel’s Avengers is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Stadia. It releases for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on March 18.
