Bethesda Starfield release date is this Christmas after June reveal

The latest rumour on Bethesda’s next game once again suggests it’s aiming for a 2021 release, although that all depends on the coronavirus.

Microsoft’s purchase of Bethesda will go down as a milestone event in the history of Xbox and perhaps gaming in general, but they did buy them at a very odd time.

There are no new Fallout or The Elder Scrolls games due out for several years and instead Bethesda’s next two titles, Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo, are signed up as 12-month PlayStation exclusives.

That means that apart from putting existing games on Game Pass there’s not much Microsoft gets out of their purchase in the short term, although that may change in November.

The next game from internal developer Bethesda Game Studios, the same team behind Fallout and Elder Scrolls, is Starfield and while it’s never been seen in public previous rumours have suggested it’s aiming for a 2021 release.

The game is believed to be a relatively realistic, sci-fi themed open world game but beyond that nothing is known about it.

However, VentureBeat writer Jeff Grubb, speaking on the Dealer – Gaming podcast, suggests that there is a 90% chance that the game will be unveiled at E3 in June and launch this November, barring any new delays caused by the pandemic.

Although the coronavirus means there’s no physical E3 event this year there are plans for an online equivalent, although Grubb may be referring to an Xbox exclusive event that’s simply held around the same time.

There’s certainly been no sign of Microsoft or Bethesda announcing new games lately, despite recent opportunities, so at this point not seeing the game officially until June wouldn’t be a surprise.
