Denuvo is coming to PS5 – but only for anti-cheat tech

PC owners might not be fans of their anti-piracy tools but PS5 owners may be more welcoming to Denuvo’s new anti-cheat software.

Cheating has always been a problem with online games but for many it’s got a lot worse in the last couple of years, especially for free-to-play games like Fortnite and Call Of Duty: Warzone.

Developers often end up banning tens of thousands of players at a time and still it never seems to make a difference, although perhaps Denuvo’s new anti-cheat tech will help.

It’s being added to the PlayStation 5 Tools and Middleware programme, which means that any developer that wants to can access the technology to use in their games.

‘Cheating ruins video games for honest players,’ says Denuvo boss Reinhard Blaukovitsch. ‘This can lead to lower engagement, game traffic and shrinking revenues for game publishers. We are really proud be able to help the world’s most talented developers to bring rich experiences for gamers on PlayStation 5.’

Although that sounds unequivocally good one of the main reasons the firm has a mixed reputation on PC is that its anti-piracy software can impact performance.

According to Denuvo their anti-cheat software ‘has minimal impact on a user’s gameplay experience’, which means of course that it does have some impact…

Denuvo anti-piracy software used to be famous for being almost impossible to crack but that’s not really the case anymore. It’s certainly a deterrent to less tech savvy pirates though and is still used in many PC titles.
