Old PlayStation Store website for PS3 and Vita games completely dead

It’s the end of an era (Pic: Wikipedia)

It looks like Sony really is preparing to shutter the digital stores for the PS3, PSP, and Vita as the web version no longer exists.

Not too long ago, word broke that Sony is planning to shut down the PlayStation Stores for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, and PlayStation Vita.

Sony itself has yet to officially state this, but the evidence for it is mounting as it has now been discovered that the old web version for the PlayStation Store has been removed.

Back in October, Sony removed the option to buy PS3, PSP, and Vita games from the PlayStation Store website, which signified the company’s desire to leave behind the old hardware and focus entirely on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

It was still possible to access the old website via a specific URL, allowing you to continue purchasing games and DLC for the older consoles. But a ResetEra user recently reported that, as of March 27, even that can no longer be accessed, with it instead redirecting you to the current PlayStation Store website.

The complete and total removal of the old PlayStation Store seems like an inevitability, prompting warnings all over for PS3, PSP, and Vita owners to download their purchases or buy certain games before it happens.

These reports have resulted in staunch criticism towards Sony from video game preservationists, as some games are only available via the old PlayStation Store and will be lost forever once it’s shut down, barring any potential re-releases.

According to TheGamer, which originally reported on the store’s closure, the PS3 and PSP stores won’t close until July, with the Vita store following suit in August so you have plenty of time to re-download or purchase games and DLC for the systems.

While the PS5 does offer backwards compatibility with PS4 games, it has always been clear that Sony considers preservation features like this less of a priority, especially when compared to Microsoft.
