We're Getting a New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Game, and It Looks Glorious

Gamers, rejoice! A new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle game is in the works—and it’s going to be an old school beat ’em up title.

The upcoming game is called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, and the experience promises to be just like the TMNT arcade titles developed back in 1989 and 1991.  Publisher Dotemu dropped the news on Wednesday with a trailer that sent our nostalgia through the roof. The video starts as a throwback to the original TMNT cartoon show, before showing us the full cast and some actual gameplay.

As you can see, the characters have been rendered with old-school digital sprites, just like the original arcade TMNT titles. But perhaps most importantly, you and three friends can play as all four ninja turtles in the game.

“Bash your way through gorgeous pixel art environments and slay tons of hellacious enemies with your favorite Turtle, each with his own skills and moves—making each run unique,” Dotemu said on the game’s product page. “Choose a fighter, use radical combos to defeat your opponents and experience intense combats loaded with breathtaking action and outrageous ninja abilities.”

The trailer also hints the turtles won’t be the only ones fighting the evil villains. The video also depicts news reporter April O’Neil beating up foot soldiers and then Master Splinter riding on a skateboard to take out a robot drone.

Dotemu was also the publisher behind the Streets of Rage 4 game, another successful revival of a classic beat em up series. So we’re optimistic the company can create a TMNT game that’ll please fans. In this case, Dotemu is tapping the developer Tribute Games, the maker of Panzer Paladin and Mercenary Kings, to develop the upcoming title.

Dotemu plans on releasing the new TMNT game for PC and consoles. The upcoming game also has a page on Steam. But for now, Dotemu has not announced a release date or price.
