Outriders beats Marvel’s Avengers peak player total on day of launch

It only came out today and yet Outriders already seems to be more popular than Avengers ever was, at least on Steam.

A video game based on Marvel’s Avengers, coming out during a pandemic that meant there were no new Marvel movies in cinemas, and at a time when people were embracing every kind of co-operative game available, should be the surest of sure-fire hits. But it wasn’t.

Whether it counts as a flop is open to debate (a lot depends on how much Square Enix paid for the licence and development, which, of course, they’re not saying) but it certainly hasn’t been the instant hit that many predicted – but Outriders might be.

Outriders is also a co-op orientated online shooter with a strong single-player component, but it’s an original IP by Bulletstorm makers People Can Fly and despite fairly low key marketing up to this point seems to be going down a storm on Steam.

Another reason it’s hard to tell exactly how well Avengers has done is that sales figures are almost never released for video games, but one useful stat that is available publicly is the number of concurrent players on Steam.

According to SteamDB the all-time peak for Avengers was 31,165 concurrent players. That was seven months ago though, when the game first launched, and in the last 24 hours the peak has been a measly 1,482 players.

Outriders only came out today and yet within 30 minutes of launching it had already beaten Avengers’ lifetime record and at time of writing has an all-time peak of 82,435 players.

That says more about Avengers’ embarrassing failure than it does Outriders’ prospects for long term success, but it certainly suggests it’s off to a good start and that Avengers is fast approaching its last breath.

Admittedly, the Avengers is not a game that ever seemed likely to earn a large audience on PC but everything so far suggests its reception on consoles has been similar.

Outriders is available for free on Xbox Game Pass so its success on Microsoft’s format will be almost impossible to judge even if figures were released, which they’re not.
